FLEAS How to Prevent them on your “Neo Mastiff”

Home-made flea spray is an effective way to go if you want to save money, and know exactly what you are applying to your Neo Mastiff, these sprays and shampoos can be use as often as you like, you will never have to worry about chemicals or pesticides being ingested into your precious pet.

A single female flea can lay 10 to 50 eggs per day and upwards of 2,000 eggs in her lifetime. Thus 1 adult flea can literally lead to an infestation of tens of thousands. Only 1% of the flea population will actually live on your pets which leaves the other 99% lurking in your house and yard in various live stages. The adult female will lay eggs on your pet, who will then act something like a salt shaker, spreading the eggs in the house. The larval stage will emerge within 1 to 10 days. The flea will remain in this stage for 5 to 11 days. This stage is the period of vulnerability where you can kill the juvenile pest. Next the flea will spin a cocoon where they will safely rest for 1 day to 6 months.  During this stage, your only hope is to vacuum or wash bedding where the cocoon lies. The flea will remain in the protective cocoon until conditions are right and then emerge to begin the life-cycle all over again. —Dr. Tracy Lord, DVM

” Good nutrition makes for very healthy pets, and very healthy pets get fewer fleas”

Fleas survive on warm vertebrates making your dog a prime target.

Start with a fresh, raw diet and give your Neo Mastiff good foods and vitamins as this will foster an undesirable home for fleas.

Supply them with plenty of vitamin B (found in most meats, organ meats, oily fish and eggs), probiotics (such as goat kefir or fermented vegetables), Sulphur rich foods (eggs, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts) as well as omega-6 fatty acids (poultry, eggs, flaxseed and hempseed) and omega-3 fatty acids (mackerel, freshly ground hemp and flaxseed).

NOTE Dried dog food goes through high heating and processing which kills the natural nutrients your Neo Mastiff requires to thrive.

These easy-to-follow recipes use safe natural ingredients.

Natural flea collars

Natural Flea Collars are simple to make and won’t harm your Neo Mastiff in any way. Simply purchase a cheap pet collar (cotton or nylon), a bandanna, a piece of webbing, or even a rope collar. Soak your selection in your choice of mixture below, and allow it to dry completely before putting it on your Neo Mastiff, or rub a few drops of Tea Tree Oil, Lavender Oil, or Eucalyptus Oil into the material of your DIY flea collar. Then once a week refresh the collar by giving it a quick spray of the mixture you have chosen.

Keep in mind, flea collars only repel fleas around your pet’s neck. They often don’t reach the rest of the dog’s body. Most likely, the fleas will just find another spot far enough away from that collar and make their home there, most flea collars (especially any that are non-toxic), are only effective for a short time.

MIXTURES
1 teaspoon unflavored vodka, 1 drop rosemary essential oil, 1 drop thyme essential oil and garlic oil from 1 small capsule

Or

1 teaspoon unflavored vodka, 1 drop eucalyptus essential oil, 1 drop cedar wood essential oil and 1 drop lemongrass essential oil

Brewer’s Yeast

Is a supplement that has additional benefits in helping ward off fleas as well as a nutritional supplement. Only use Brewer’s yeast or nutritional yeast (not Baker’s or bread-making yeast).

MIXTURE
1 teaspoon per 30 lb./13.5kg body weight mixed into your pets food every day, plus 1/2 a teaspoon of cinnamon per 30 lb./13.5kg body weight. Start by giving only a pinch of these nutraceuticals so your dog will get used to them.

FRESH ROSEMARY

Take 4 ltrs water

Combine 2 cups of fresh Rosemary leaves and 2 pints of boiling water. Allow the mixture to boil for 30 minutes. Strain the liquid, throw away the leaves, (depending on the size of your pup/dog you may need to make a larger batch once your Neo Mastiff is full grown). Wait until the brew cools, but is still warm enough to be comfortable. Pour it over your pet until he’s soaked and let it dry naturally.

NOTE  In addition to repelling fleas on dogs, the Rosemary is an anti-inflammatory, so it can help relieve itching and scratching from fleas. Rosemary can be used around the house as well as on your pet to help repel fleas. Grind up rosemary leaves into a powder. Sprinkle in areas your dog sleeps and in areas he frequently plays around the house

Note: Rosemary is a natural flea repellent, it will not get rid of fleas but help repel and prevent them

Lemon Spray Repellent

Fresh lemons are another natural remedy

Cut a lemon into quarters, cover with boiling water, and let it steep overnight. In the morning, spray the mixture on your pet, behind his ears, around the base of his tail, and under his legs. Do not spray the mixture in your dog’s eyes or his private parts.

If your pet won’t let you spray him/her, try rubbing the juice from a freshly squeezed lemon or orange on your dog fur.

NOTE  Lemons contain limonene — a chemical that kills and repels fleas on dogs. It can be used daily on your dog’s skin and coat.

NOTE Make sure you use fresh citrus and not citrus essential oil, which can be dangerous to your pet.

Cedar Oil

Cedar oil (also known as Cedar wood oil) is an Essential Oil derived from the foliage, wood, and roots of various types of conifers. It has anti-bacterial properties and pesticide effects, which is why it works so well on fleas (and ticks).  It can be used directly on your Neo and on things within your pet’s environment.

Garlic

Only use fresh organic whole garlic cloves, do not use garlic supplements.
It is safe to give your pet Garlic no matter what size your Neo Mastiff is, do not  give more than two cloves of garlic per day.

NOTE
It would be advisable to start feeding garlic one month before the beginning of flea season and you’ll find this will be an excellent deterrent.

Apple Cider Vinegar
Unfiltered apple cider vinegar (ACV) will give a balanced alkalinity on your pets intestines and also creates a more acidic environment for your dog skin and coat.
ACV contains nutrients, vitamins, minerals, vital acids and potassium.
MIXTURE
By feeding your Neo mastiff ½ teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar per day, per 10kg of weight should make the skin and coat slightly acidic this will help deter fleas on your pet.  .
NOTE Dogs should have a pH between 6.2 and 6.5. To know the PH of your pet test your dog’s urine with pH strips.

Apple Cider Vinegar Recipe

120ml warm water

180ml. Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, unfiltered
¼ tsp of sea salt or pink Himalayan salt

MIXTURE
Mix all ingredients in a spray bottle and apply to your dog’s coat weekly, making sure you get all parts of your pet covered being careful to avoid their eyes and private parts or open wounds.

Essential Oils

Essential oils must be mixed with a carrier oil or a vegetable oil to dilute them. NEVER WATER. The oils will not break down in water. Thin carrier oils (grape seed or fractionated coconut oil are good natural substances to dissolve oils).

Mix one drop of essential oil to one milliliter of carrier oil.

NOTE Water-suspended essential oils for fleas is dangerous. Water cannot safely disband essential oils as essential oils are NOT water-soluble. Unless your essentials oils have been diluted with a solvent they could harm your pet.

Flea repelling essential oils include

Cedar (cedrus atlantica)
Clary sage
Eucalyptus (pinus radiata)
Lavender
Lemon
Peppermint
Palma Rosa
NOTE Flea repellents that contain wintergreen, pennyroyal and clove are dangerous for your pet and should not be used for any reason.

Place the all ingredients in a bowl

SHAMPOO
Commonly used ingredients in homemade dog shampoo include castile soap, coconut oil, (to moisturize), distilled water, lavender essential oil, (to help combat fleas), rosemary, and vinegar (to remove smells).

NOTE to help your dog’s coat look shiny and healthy use white vinegar it is antibacterial and acts as a deodorizer. (Be careful when using vinegar as it is mildly acidic and may be painful if it gets in your pet’s eyes)

10 ounces water
2 ounces Aloe Vera gel
1 tablespoons of Castile Soap
2 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil
2 drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil
2 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
2 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil

Combine all ingredients, in an empty container and shake thoroughly. Wet your pets coat with warm water and lather the mixture into their coat leave for 5 minutes then rinse with warm water. Making sure you do not get the shampoo in their eyes.

Homemade Flea Shampoo (for sensitive skin)
1 liter of water
1 cup of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar
1 cup of baby shampoo or nontoxic dish soap

(Avoid dish washing liquid that have strong scents or artificial additives.)

Apply solution with a spray bottle work the flea shampoo into your pet’s fur, particularly along hard-to-reach areas down the spine, the base of the tail, the chest, and under the forearms, and let it soak in for at least five minutes. Comb or brush your dog during this time to remove dead fleas. Then rinse in warm water.

NOTE Fleas and ticks do not die upon contact with shampoo. Rather, the shampoo works over time. By leaving the shampoo on for at least 20-30 minutes before rinsing helps to eliminate fleas and ticks. Always, pay special attention to the area between the toes and around the ears.

NOTE If your dog doesn’t have skin issues you can make them a dry shampoo.

DRY SHAMPOO
3 tablespoons Baking soda
3 tablespoons Corn flour
6 drops Vanilla essential oil or Lemon or Lavender essential oil

Combine baking soda, corn flour and your choice of essential oil together, sprinkle a tiny bit on your dog’s hair and rub it around with your hands. The baking soda and corn flour will absorb the bad smells and the oils.

NOTE A dry shampoo should only be used as a stopgap do not apply this method too frequently, as the residue from the powder can accumulate, no matter how much a dog shakes himself afterward.

DISH WASHING LIQUID
Washing your Neo Mastiff with a dishwashing liquid and white vinegar, will kill the fleas on your Neo’s body.
NOTE Avoid dish washing liquid that have strong scents or artificial additives.

This method is also perfect for washing away any accumulated oils on your pet’s skin and coat.

Natural remedies will take a little longer to work to get rid of fleas, the way chemical do. This is because the chemicals are clearly stronger and unfortunately mostly harmful to your pet. So be patient and continue to follow the natural remedy dog flea treatment consistently until your flea problem has been solved.

To keep fleas at bay, it’s important to do a few things very regularly:

Wash your dog’s bedding and clothing frequently.

Vacuum all carpet, rugs, and upholstery.

Brush your Neo Mastiff regularly. Any good dog brush will work however some are better than others, a flea comb works even better due to the comb’s teeth being really close together.

NOTE A flea comb with a double row of teeth works best of all.
