Most Common Neo Mastiff Health Issues

The Neo Mastiff breed dates back to the time of Alexander the Great. Originally bred as a family guard dog, the large animal is majestic, large and yet quick at the same time. As with other dog breeds, the Neo Mastiff does have several health issues it is more susceptible to. Here are a few of the most common health concerns an owner will need to look out for.

Cherry Eye

This is one of the most common health issues a Neo Mastiff will experience in its life. The heavy skin of the dog already pulls down around the eye, leaving more of the eye exposed. This may cause irritation of the eye, causing it to become inflamed and bright red. The condition is treated rather easily, but monitoring eye health is important.

Growing Pains

The Neo Mastiff grows rapidly during the first year. Far faster than most other breeds. Due to this, some dogs may experience panosteitis, better known as growing pains. The pain is not something that will last and there is very little in preventative methods an owner can utilize. However, if the dog seems to be in extreme pain a vet can prescribe some medication for the short term.

Hip Dysplasia

This is a condition more commonly found in larger dogs, especially the Neo Mastiff. For dogs suffering from the disease, the ball and socket of the hip do not meet correctly. This results in the hip bones rubbing against one another, instead of the smooth, natural movement. Hip dysplasia typically begins at a younger age and becomes more apparent later in life. As it is more common in large dogs, a vet will most likely recommend occasional X-rays in order to monitor hip health and take preventative measures before the condition becomes more extreme.

While Neo Mastiffs are susceptible to all other kinds of health related issues other dog breeds may experience, these are the most common medical concerns to watch out for. Staying proactive, knowing the warning signs and addressing the condition as quickly as possible can ensure an improved quality of health for the dog.
